I DO not consider myself to be competitive, I am happy to see others win, especially when I’m playing with my kids!

But I do have a competitive streak, which comes up with myself!

I have some of the traits you would typically associate with being a ‘high achiever’.

There is nothing I love more than setting myself goals and I am constantly on the lookout for new challenges.

However, and this is where a trait can become a curse, as soon as I have conquered or mastered my goal or challenge, I barely give it a backward glance before moving on to the next thing, not really pausing to enjoy the attainment.

The downside for high achievers is they get loads done, but the feeling of success and happiness is rarely enjoyed.

They believe that if they complete this course, get this job or promotion, they will be happy, but like trying to get to the horizon, it elusively moves each time they get near and can leave them dissatisfied.

Achievers are driven to produce, but no matter how much they accomplish, they can feel like they aren’t doing enough.

The good news is that I have discovered how to deal with the downsides and still get the benefits.

The solution is twofold.

Firstly, understand that the joy of a goal is in the process. Just as life is not an end destination, but a journey, the pleasure is to be had along the way, so take time to smell the roses.

Secondly, every time you complete a goal or challenge, force yourself to stop and enjoy it.

Buy a scrapbook or journal and write down every single triumph and accomplishment, look over it often to really savour that feeling of success and the happiness of completion.
