PROPOSALS to create a waste site in North Bersted have been approved.
County councillors backed the scheme by GR Ayling for the waste transfer station and materials recycling facility at Elbridge Farm.
The county council’s planning committee agreed to the plan last week in spite of 23 objections. The main issues raised were highway safety and congestion around the Chichester Road site, noise, dust, smell, contamination, visual impact and flooding.
But a report to the committee by county strategic planning manager Michael Elkington stated the development was needed and the location was appropriate.
The proposed use would result in up to 60 HGV movement at the site daily, his report said. It is estimated 48 would be skip lorries of 6.5m. The rest would be 9m long four-axled tipper trucks.
The impact of them had to be balanced against the site’s existing business use with no restrictions on lorries.
