New U3A branch is formed for villagers

VILLAGERS have their own branch of the University of the Third Age.

Residents of Yapton, Walberton and Barnham and the surrounding area can join the new Arun West branch of the self-help organisation.

This came into being last Wednesday when the former Arun U3A was dissolved.

Arun West was one of three branches – with a combined membership of about 1,200 –which has taken its place.

Frank Griffin, its chairman, said: “No qualifications are necessary other than enthusiasm to join the U3A movement which is for all semi-retired and retired people. For a small annual fee, newcomers can join a lively mix of people who want to develop, add to or extend their interests, socialise and enjoy a self-help organisation where everything is done by members for members in more than 100 groups in the area.

“They range from bridge to art, languages, gardening, outings, book clubs, line dancing and singing to keep fit.”

New groups are formed whenever the support exists to mean the U3A evolves all the time. The 200-strong Arun West branch will be focused on the PO21 and PO22 areas as well as Yapton and Climping.

It is in a network with the two other new branches to ensure one membership covers all of them. Details from 01243 584358.

Bognor Regis has a Regis U3A branch, formed in May 2011, unaffected by the change.
