Lower floor of chapel may have new use

THE ground floor of a Barnham chapel could be turned into living space.

Caroline Elvis wants permission from Arun District Council to change the use of the ground floor of The Chapel in Yapton Road to residential.

In a statement submitted with the application, she states no demolition or alteration work is proposed and existing access and parking arrangements would not be changed.

The building was constructed as a Methodist Chapel to serve Barnham. It became redundant and planning consent was granted in January 2004 to let it become a funeral directors with a chapel of rests.

Two years later permission was given for a detached building to be constructed to the rear of the site to provide garaging and accommodation for staff. The first floor of the chapel was changed to residential use in 2008.
