Young volunteers win recognition for services

Three young Bognor Regis volunteers have seen their services to the community recognised.

Kieran Playle-Howard, 16, Tom Simmonds, 16, and Katie Tilling,18, were the latest individuals to receive Penny Awards from the Bognor Hotham Rotary Club.

The town's MP, Nick Gibb, presented personalised certificates and gift vouchers to the trio on the club's behalf. He congratulated all three on their excellent work.

Kieran and Tom had been nominated by the Outset charity, which matches young people to volunteering opportunities, for running an after-school football club at South Bersted CoE Primary School and a five-a-side tournament at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham.

Outset's local co-ordinator, Margaret Sanders, was present at the ceremony.

Katie received her award for her role as a leader of the Youth Of Bognor camp as part of her work towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Members of their families joined Rotary club members at the presentation.

Sisters Bethan and Megan Hamilton, who were also award-winners, were unable to attend.

The annual Penny Awards originated from a bequest from local benefactor John Pennington-Richards, who asked the Rotary Club to recognise the good works young volunteers do in the community.

The winners derive from the Bognor area nominees for the annual Arun youth awards scheme.
