Woolworths closure leaves 'toy-less zone' in Bognor

Woolworths' closure has created a toy-less zone in Bognor Regis, says one of its keenest customers.

Stephanie Bayley, the secretary of the town's chamber of commerce, said: "Woolies closing is a national tragedy as far as I am concerned. The company is an institution and where is there for anyone to buy toys in the town now? I usually go into Woolworths lots of times around Christmas.

"There is nowhere else in the town with the range of toys or CDs or DVDs that they had.

"When you went in there for one thing, you bought other items as well," said the mother of two sons. "It was also so handy being able to park in Fitzleet and go across Bedford Street to their store.

"The absence of Woolies means that people will go elsewhere to buy items like toys and the danger is they will do their other shopping there as well. That could have a big knock-on effect on the rest of the town centre shops in Bognor. That's a worrying thought."

From the chamber's point of view, Mrs Bayley said there was concern about the loss of jobs of the Woolworths' staff as well as the impact of such a large building being empty in the precinct.
