West Sussex road damage fears

SERIOUS concerns over the prospect of more serious accidents in West Sussex as a result of deteriorating roads were expressed at a committee meeting.

Cllr Steve Waight said a county council report was already indicating that a new target for a reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on the county's roads in 2010 was unlikely to be achieved.

"It concerns me that there is now almost an acceptance that we will not achieve the target," he told the community services select committee.

He had already raised concerns over highway condition, and the fact that winter maintenance for the previous year had not caught up with this year - before damage caused by the recent freeze.

Winter maintenance

Cllr Waight also referred to the fact that winter maintenance programme money was being diverted.

A report presented at the meeting said that in order to balance the county council's capital programme to the borrowing limits, 1m of principal roads structural maintenance had been diverted from 2011-2012 to 2012-13.

"Is it true that if road condition deteriorates, this could have an adverse impact on killed or seriously injured accident figures, and if so should the county council be paying more attention to the surface of its roads?" he demanded.

Cllr Anne Hall said she felt potholes were a particular danger to people on two wheels.

The county council was responsible for keeping roads in a condition where they were as safe as possible for people on bikes.
