A MEET-and-greet with the town’s first citizen awaited student teachers when they arrived in Bognor Regis.
Bognor Regis town mayor Tony Gardiner formally and warmly welcomed the 19 educators from China at a special event in the town hall on August 19.
Cllr Gardiner was able to tell them a bit about the area and its history and local government as well as answer any questions they had.
Cllr Gardiner said: “It is always nice to welcome people to Bognor Regis. I am glad that they will be spending some time here and see what we have to offer.”
The student teachers, who are all from Zhabei in Shanghai, are participating in a programme run by the University of Chichester which provides foreign teachers the experience of English teaching.
During their two-month stay they will also carry out a one week placement in one of the area’s schools so they can see first-hand what life in an English school is really like.
David Smith, one of the university’s senior lecturers said: “The group are all leading teachers in China and the idea is to show them what teaching here is like.
“When they are here we treat them as teachers.
“We have five primary school teachers and 12 secondary teachers so it is a good mix.”
