AWARD-WINNING Turner’s Pies has joined the upper crust of Bognor Regis businesses.
The family firm has become the latest company to be honoured with the Chamber of Commerce’s Britten Award, begun in 1952, for its outstanding success in the town.
Turner’s Pies has won many national titles for its ltasty creations and sells about 100 of its large pies to top store Harrods a week.
Pip Turner, who oversees the company, said: “This is absolutely fantastic. We are very proud to receive this award. We champion Bognor and we support Bognor and we are absolutely delighted with this.
“When we receive these awards, we are always Turner’s Pies of Bognor. We have seen off a lot of pie-makers from the Midlands and the North and, to be honest, they don’t like it.”
The company was founded in 1933 by his mother, Eva Turner, in the former Commercial Hotel in Station Road. Mr Turner took over in 1985 and opened the current premises on Hawthorn Road 25 years ago.
His three sons - Philip, Peter and Joseph - now carry out most of the everyday duties and have expanded its activities. Several thousand pies a week made in Bognor and Littlehampton are sold.
They include steak and kidney and steak and Stilton as well as fruit pies, quiches and sausage rolls. The company has 15 employees.
Mr Turner said:. “We have a lot of repeat and loyal customers. People want to know what is in their food. All our meat is quality assured.”
Chamber of commerce president and chairman Nick Stuart-Nicolson said: “Turner’s Pies have made Bognor the pie capital of Britain. We are proud they are members of the chamber and the town must be proud to have them here.”
Bognor’s MP Nick Gibb, said: “This is a wonderful success story for Bognor.
“We have a first-class product which is being sold in other parts of the country.
“If you have a quality product, you can build a successful business and that’s what we have here.”
