VIDEO: Learn how to train your puppy the Canine Partners way

Waiting for Video...

AN assistance dog from Canine Partners can transform the lives of people with disabilities – helping them with all kinds of day-to-day tasks to give them greater independence and confidence as well as providing invaluable companionship.

But how are these amazing dogs taught the ‘tricks of their trade’?

And are there useful lessons the average pet-owner can learn from the training experts at Canine Partners?

To find out, Jo Rothery and Observer photographer Kate Shemilt spent the morning with the charity’s puppy training class.

You can read the full feature in today’s Observer (Thursday, March 13, edition) but here is a short video demonstrating the best way to teach your puppy a basic sit.

Over the next few weeks we will be running a series of step-by-step guides in the paper which could also prove invaluable for any pet-lovers who may be taking on a new pup – or even want to try to teach an old dog new tricks!

We will be looking at how to teach the basic down and stay, recall, retrieve and socialisation.
