GENEROUS patients at a Bognor Regis surgery are helping to keep children safe.

The Friends of Bersted Green Surgery have presented £3,500 to the doctors.

Most of the donation will be used to buy children’s oximeters.

Dr Mark Weeks, the surgery’s senior partner, said: “The oximeters are a piece of kit that will make a real difference to the safety and care of our younger patients and the speed at which they get attention.”

The oximeters will fit on a young person’s finger to give an accurate reading of the amount of oxygen in their blood.

This will enable the GPs to make quick decisions about a child’s condition and will enable information to be given to a hospital if necessary.

The rest of the donation will buy eye examination equipment for patients at the Durlston Drive practice.

Dr Weeks paid tribute to the ‘tireless’ Friends.

The group has raised £1,856 so far this year to add to a similar amount carried over from 2013.

Treasurer Valerie Cuthbert said the most lucrative activity was selling donated books.

“The Friends are about ten years old and this has to be one of our largest single donations,” she said. Other donated goods are sold at auction.
