THE friendly owner of an independent beauty salon has been nominated for this year’s Observer Community Awards.

Ellie O’Flanagan, who runs Toucan Beauty in Donnington, has been nominated in the category of Best Community Person.

“It’s so lovely to be nominated, it’s made my day,” said Ellie.

“I live in Donnington so it was ideal to set up here. When you work and live in a small place, it is friends and clients that keep you going.”

The salon is on the doorstep of St Wilfrid’s Hospice – so Ellie offers all the staff discounted treatments and volunteers her services for patients.

As a former parish councillor, she is also used to people diving into the salon to catch up, and she regularly supports village events, such as raffles and fairs.

“I get people popping in for coffee and a chat, which is great.”

The woman who nominated Ellie said: “She is so supportive of Donnington and since 2008 when she opened her little salon, it has become a community hub. She is so caring if she hasn’t seen someone for a little while.”

Best Community Person is just one of the 14 categories in this year’s awards, so get nominating!

The event

FOR the second year running, the evening will be held at Butlin’s, a venue which proved a real hit at last year’s glitzy awards night.

But there’s a long way to go before our awards night in December – first we need you to vote for the people, schools and sports teams that deserve recognition.

The awards have just been launched so if you think it’s about time a person who does a lot of good in their local community gets rewarded, get in touch!

To nominate email or go to our Facebook page to put someone forward.

This year’s Community Awards will be hosted by legendary TV personality and news reader Fred Dinenage.

But the awards could not go ahead without the help of our sponsors.

Last week, the Observer announced The Steve Bernard Foundation, in partnership with the Chichester Student Union, was supporting Sports Team of the Year.
