Take a stroll - it's Walk to Work week!

EAST Sussex County Council is encouraging people to go for a walk as part of their working day during national Walk to Work Week this week.

Walking is an environmentally friendly and healthy way to travel and the aim of the week, organised by the charity Living Streets through their Walking Works campaign, is to help people fit this activity into their day.

The county council has registered as a campaign supporter of Walk to Work Week from today (Monday April 26) to Friday, April 30.

It is asking staff to sign up on the Walk to Work website and get walking.

By signing up to the site people can record the amount walked each day and find out its equivalent in muffins, carbon dioxide savings or distance walked around Wembley Stadium.

Coun Matthew Lock said: "With the warmer weather finally here, this is a fantastic opportunity to fit some exercise into the day and enjoy some beautiful East Sussex scenery.

"If you live far from where you work, you could try walking for part of the journey."

Coun Lock said options included parking the car a few streets away and walking, or getting off the bus a stop or two early. Lunch times were also ideal for a stroll.

He said: "If it is difficult to find the time to walk during the week then perhaps you could go on one of our guided walks over the bank holiday weekend. Details and maps of some fantastic Fitness Walks around East Sussex are available on the county council website.

"Walking is good for us, it can help save us money and it is an eco-friendly way of getting from A to B."
