Residents in outcry at bid to build homes in Rose Green

Building plans for a Rose Green estate have provoked protests from residents.

Places for People wants to build 26 homes on the Willowhale Farm Estate. It intends to site them in the current garage compounds and allotments.

But the proposals attracted opposition when they were displayed for the first time with almost 200 people flocking to see the plans.

There are more than 300 properties – bungalows, chalet bungalows and two-storey blocks of flats – on the estate centred around Elbridge Crescent and Pryors Lane. The estate dates from 1968.

It was intended as an overspill for the residents of Islington in North London.

It was created by the former Greater London Council. Ownership switched to the North British Housing Association, which has become Places for People.

The mixture of bungalows, chalet bungalows and flats is divided between PfP properties and private owners. All the garages are believed to be owned by PfP. Since the estate was built, Willowhale Library, Grove House surgery, Willowhale Community College and the parish council's offices have been created to provide a range of services on peoples' doorsteps.

A PfP spokesman said the intention was to build 26 new properties – 19 of them two storeys high – on eight sites around the estate. Seven bungalows for disabled people would go on the 12 allotments.

Some of the proposed homes would be sold. Others will be made available for rent or shared ownership.

"The garages have become rundown and fallen into disrepair," he explained. "They are also remote from people's homes. In this day and age, people want parking next door to their properties."

He said parking would be provided elsewhere on the estate to compensate for the garages' loss. Building the new housing would help to meet the high demand for affordable properties, he added.

Further consultation on the plans would be held in a few months before a planning application was submitted to Arun District Council before the end of the year.
