Ready, set, go for Olympic torch in Bognor Regis
Olympics enthusiasm is building six months before the Games’ famous torch is carried through Bognor Regis.
It will be on Monday, July 16, when the symbol of the world’s greatest sporting occasion will visit the town.
It will then pass through Aldingbourne and Westergate on its way to Arundel.
Phil Graham is in charge of putting together the official welcome for the torch on behalf of Arun District Council where he is the marketing, events and filming officer.
He said: “This is going to be a big opportunity for Bognor and the other areas the torch is going through.
“I’ve had a lot of interest from the general public and different organisations about what is going on.
“If people are starting to do that already, then come July I am sure there’s going to be a tremendous amount of enthusiasm around the district.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I can’t imagine the torch coming to this area again.
“By the time it gets here, there is going to be an immense amount of interest and it will be obvious it’s a big occasion for the whole country.
“The torch relay will also give people who can’t get to the Olympics their chance to be part of the occasion.”
Bognor Regis Town Council will co-ordinate the Olympic torch relay event through Bognor.
The London 2012 organisers have yet to reveal the exact route of the torch’s journey through Bognor and the timing of its appearance in the town. But it is passing through on its way from Portsmouth to Brighton and would appear to be going along the A259 into the town and the A29 northwards.
Mr Graham is meeting schools around the Arun district and other major groups to discuss how to ensure the torch and the relay runners receive a fitting welcome.
He has set up an e-form on the council’s website – www.arun.gov.uk – for volunteers for the relay to contact him.
There will also be other roles available such as marshals.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 12:07 PMNow now Cressers - Don't forget that this is an excellent opportunity to claim on the insurance after an unfortunate trip, thereby getting a few badly needed new buildings built on the site of the "potential" unfortunate fire !! Still I'm assuming as it's a Monday nobody will be there anyway ! Bet it does not go through the Town centre or along the front - My money is on a direct route to Arundle.
