POTENTIAL operators of the planned cafe in Hotham Park in Bognor Regis have been urged to put themselves forward.

A competitive tendering exercise to find an operator is planned by Arun District Council later this month.

A council spokeswoman said: “With
the high-quality building and elegant design, this is a golden opportunity for the right business.

“The council will fund much of the fit-out work for the cafe, leaving the operator to invest in the final decorations and finishes, the kitchen and catering equipment and the cafe seating
and furniture.”

As reported, the design for the cafe was approved last week by the council’s Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee.

Arun is funding the design and build of the facility close to the park’s boating lake.

It expects the cafe to open next spring subject to final approval.

It is committed to spending £250,000 on the work and could put in up to another £140,000 depending a decision
by councillors. The cafe will be the first
in the park to have indoor as well as outdoor seats.

Builder Falcon Homes and architect Phil Brown won the tender from the council to be the design and build contractor for the single-storey café.

Mr Brown told the sub-committee how his proposals had met the design brief for a café building that was modern and stylish, used the space of the site and made the most of the outlook with extensive glazing and folding doors. It will also have vertical timber cladding, possibly larch or birch.

Planting will also be wrapped around the café to link and embed it within the park.

Cllr Trevor Bence (C, Pevensey), chairman of the sub-committee, told
Mr Brown he liked the proposal. “I think the design is really nice. Thank you very much for all your efforts,” he said.

The rest of the debate at the
sub-committee concerned the increasing cost of the cafe.

Its location is determined by its proximity to electricity and water supplies. But it has been criticised by park-lovers for being too far within the open space for delivery lorries to reach safely.

Anyone interested in operating the cafe should contact Caroline Gosford, at Arun District Council, on 01903 737854.
