New market is on track for Bognor Regis station

A NEW all-year market is being opened in Bognor Regis.

The new enterprise will be based in two former booking halls at the town’s railway station.

Operator Paul Martin said he expected the market to consist of an initial 30 stalls after he agreed a deal with the railway authorities to move into the space next month.

He planned to expand into the adjoining former railway social club to take the capacity to 50 stalls.

“Bognor needs somewhere to trade,” he said. “It’s so expensive to set up a shop here.

“There’s been a lot of demand for stalls so far. This market will be open six days a week all year.

“There will be a farmers’ market with breads and cheeses and a clothing section.

“The station is the right place for a market. It’s in the town centre, it’s a well known building and the market brings some empty rooms back into use.”

Mr Martin will bring his experience running a market in La Manga in Spain for eight years to the station.

It has been some 20 years since the last town centre covered market in the final days of the former bus station in the High Street.

The most recent use proposed for the former booking halls was a community arts centre.
