SIX new stores could be built along one of the main roads into Bognor Regis.
D2 Planning wants to create the retail outlets in former warehouses on the A29 Shripney Road in North Bersted.
The buildings are sited immediately south of the McDonald’s restaurant and takeaway which opened a year ago. D2 wants to knock down the existing buildings and replace them with six similarly-sized shops.
A report by D2’s planning agent, Des Dunlop, with the planning application to Arun District Council for the work, states: “The site has been owned by the applicant since July 2009 and has been previously occupied by F&G Transport (Bognor) Ltd storage and distribution.
“They vacated the premises in May 2013 and employed eight people.
“Since then, the applicant has been marketing the premises, but has had no interest from warehouse/storage users. There are three warehouse units owned by Hermes to the south of the application site which are vacant and have been for some time.”
Two of the shops will be 4,903sq ft each, two will be 5,357sq ft and the other two 4,857sq ft. This is between a quarter and a third the size of the town-centre Morrisons. There will be 73 parking spaces with access off Oldlands Way.
An earlier report for Arun stated the district was not regarded as a major distribution location, he said.
