New changing rooms will boost sailing in Felpham

NEW £50,000 changing rooms at Felpham Sailing Club will enable it to offer more people to chance to get out on the water.

The facilities at the Blakes Road building are being brought into use for the first time as the better weather nears.

They have been funded from Sports England’s London 2012 legacy fund.

The new rooms, created during the winter, mean the club will be able to accommodate extra people who would like to go sailing, as well as making the experience more enjoyable.

Keith Hopper, the club’s commodore, said: “The previous changing rooms were 30 years old and needed modernising. New boilers were needed as the hot water often ran out when the club was at its busiest.

“Female participation has also grown so much that the female changing area wasn’t big enough.

“It often meant females were left hanging around and getting changed in shifts due to the lack of space.”

The end of that practice should prompt more newcomers to become involved in the sport.

“It enhances the likelihood of people wanting to come back and sail regularly with us because they know we’re committed to investing in the club,” said Mr Hopper.

Felpham SC was shortlisted for the top RYA Club of the Year award in 2013.

A celebration of the new rooms will take place on a free taster weekend of May 17 and 18.

This will take place just before the adult RYA Start Sailing courses start on May 25. The junior start sailing course begins on April 26.
