MASONS in Bognor Regis have backed a teenager’s mission to cheer up children in hospital.

The members of the Gordon Lodge donated £500 to Tyler’s Trust for its work providing gift boxes to the ill youngsters.

Lodge master Colin Moore invited the trust’s inspiration, Tyler Murphy, to sit in his chair in the Gordon Centre for the presentation.

Steve Grove, the lodge’s assistant director of ceremonies, said: “We don’t normally present cheques like this but we wanted to show you what masons are about and to show our appreciation of what you are doing.

“We spend a lot of our time raising money for charities and good causes and we are very impressed with you.

“We decided to raise money for you at one of our nights and the feedback we got was fantastic.”

Tyler, 17, of Orchard Way, Barnham, devised the idea for the parcels during one of his hospital stays for treatment for a brain tumour.

He said: “It was really good sitting in the chair and I’m very happy with the amount that has been raised.”

The trust has given out its first four boxes. Each contains items such as a bandana, journal, pens and pencils and a mug.

Tyler’s mum, Jan Ellis, said: “This is an incredible donation because it’s local people helping us.”
