A PARTY was held in Walberton to celebrate the 100th birthday of a woman born in the village.
Linda Baker was joined by 40 guests in the village hall when she reached her personal milestone.
They included a nephew who had come from Australia, neighbours and friends, and Roy and Joan Jackson from Walberton. Roy’s family had lived next door to the Bakers in the early 1900s and his sister, Molly, had been Miss Baker’s best friend at school.
Miss Baker played Puck in Walberton Village School’s production of Midsummer Night’s Dream in the village’s vicarage around 1924.
She was one of nine children born to Charleis and Blanche Baker. Charlie was head gamekeeper at Avisford Park and then the Duke of Norfolk’s estate at Arundel.
Miss Baker trained as a children’s nanny with Barnado’s. She worked all over the country before she looked after her parents. After their death, she moved to Fitzalan Road in Arundel where she has lived for the past 50 years. She worked as a shop assistant.
