LAST-minute entries have given the line-up for this weekend’s Illuminations Gala a healthier look.
The organisers of the event were worried a lack of participants would make the parade a short and disappointing night-time spectacle.
But the slow trickle of entries speeded up in the past week to mean Sunday’s procession should at least match those of previous years.
Further entries will still be welcomed by Bognor Regis Seafront Lights. Secretary Greg Burt said: “Entries can be accepted right up until the day before.
“So, there is still time to enter a float, pram, bicycle or walking group and be in with a chance to win one of the many cash prizes, totalling £275, and trophies.”
This year’s line-up will as usual be led by Horndean Band and will also include lights’ mascot Billy the Bulb after his return last year from retirement.
The procession will leave West Park at 8.30pm to wind its way along the seafront and Aldwick Road to the pier.
Prize-giving will take place in front of The Royal Hotel about 10.15pm immediately after the fireworks from the pier at 10pm.
The gala has been held with few interruptions since it was started in the late 1970s. It traditionally attracts thousands of residents and visitors to line the route and admire the illuminated floats and walking groups.
Started by the former Bognor Regis Illuminations Fund, the event passed to Bognor Regis Round Table.
It then returned to become a major fundraiser for the seafront illuminations 12 years ago under the auspices of Bognor Regis Seafront Lights.
The event is sponsored by Bognor Regis Town Council with support from Arun District Council.
Anyone who would like to join the procession should contact Greg on 07739 506275.
Bottons Amusements will be staging a funfair on The Esplanade from tomorrow to Monday which will see the road closed and diversions.
