Horsham district church volunteer food awards

CHURCH volunteers in the Horsham District have gained valuable skills in food safety.

Twenty-two kitchen volunteers from local churches studied aspects of food hygiene to gain the nationally recognised Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 Award in Food Safety on Monday June 29.

The training was provided by Horsham District Council's Environmental Health Officers and covered issues such as cleaning, cross contamination, and food storage, as well as stressing the importance of hygiene procedures and clearly setting out the responsibilities of managers and staff.

The volunteers all work for nothing at local churches including St John's in Broadbridge Heath, Brighton Road Baptist Church in Horsham, Rehoboth Church in Horsham and Life Baptist Church in Horsham, Holbrook Church, and Haywards Heath Baptist Church.

None of the attendees had any prior official training in food safety and they all did very well.

This local training was provided by Horsham District Council. It was an opportunity to give food handlers skills and knowledge to ensure the highest standards are achieved when church volunteers prepare food for church events.

Following the training, the volunteers undertook a multiple-choice test. Once passed, the volunteers will get their certificates and they can then develop their food safety skills further should they want to through higher level courses.

Anyone interested in obtaining food hygiene training, or for more information contact Horsham District Council email: karen.aslett@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215428.
