Help save water in Sussex
IF YOU spot a leaking water main, you could help to save millions of litres of water.
Southern Water is reminding customers to call in when they spot a leak, to help conserve water supplies during the driest winter since 1976.
Some 46,300 customers called the company’s freephone leakline number on 0800 820999 last year, helping to save millions of litres of water.
Their vigilance has contributed to the water firm recording its lowest leakage figures for four years.
Since September, the company has beaten its monthly target set by regulator Ofwat by about eight million litres of water per day.
This is the result of an ongoing leak reduction programme which includes the replacement of water mains and the installation of water meters which are fitted with leak alarms.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 09:49 PMI agree with Carter St and have a poor view of all our utility companies. They are all being run for greed and in my view not looking after the puplic that they serve. Water meters to save you money phreeeer!!!!! They are so Water Companies don't have to expand their reseviours as the population expands. They mean that they can charge more for less. As for leaks yes it would be good to spot them quickly but the Water company run the mains and they should have extra fail safes and newer pipes if they are really interested in stopping leaks. If it happens in your bit of pipe into your house most of which are still old iron then you are responsible and as it's beyond the meter it can get expensive.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 04:03 PMWhy save water?. If we get to drought conditions, it may make these greedy developers,in collusion with councils, think twice regarding all this overdevelopment in Sussex!. One lives in hope.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 11:24 AMI see this slightly differently Carter St. Water services are almost entirely undergraound but not necessarily on busy roads or estates. People like dog walkers and hikers are invaluable as they go to more isolated areas. A leak in an isolated area could run for weeks without repair. It's a case of many eyes make light of leaks I suspect. ! !

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 10:24 AMIf Southern Water did what they are paid for, and installed the correct equipment, they could save billions of litres of water. How is this story news? 46,000 people called the LEAKLINE? I can't imagine Sainbury's operating a 'theftline' to control wastage- they would (and do) sort out the problem. Water leakage is not a problem. Poor maintenance is.
