SUPPORTERS of a Barnham man raising funds for lifesaving brain surgery have contributed £18,000.
The friends and family of Gavin Hunnikin have spent two months bringing in money to enable him to have a brain tumour destroyed in a £75,000 treatment available only in America.
The next fundraising event for him will be a tabletop sale from 10am-3pm on January 25 at Hunston Village Hall. This has been organised by Chris Leeder, owner of Kirklands, the village newsagent.
On New Year’s Day, Gavin’s neice held a sponsored cycle ride in pouring rain and wind around Rutland Water which raised £221.26 on the day, with more to come.
Brian Hunnikin, of the Rutland Rouleur club, said: “It was so good to see the smiles and laughter shining through despite the conditions.
“With the forecast as bad as the weather turned out to be, I was not expecting anyone to venture out.
“The impressive turnout left us quite overcome and stuck for words.”
Gavin, 40, was born and raised in Hunston before he moved to his present home on Gospond Road.
The gene therapy treatment to remove the tumour Gavin is available only at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston, USA. Gavin has had the tumour for ten years. Two operations, radiotherapy and chemotherapy have failed to destroy it.
