Focus on tattoos and body piercing
Mid Sussex District Council has adopted new byelaws that give Environmental Health Officers greater powers to monitor the public health and safety in cosmetic body art, piercing and acupuncture premises.
The law previously applied to premises that carried out acupuncture, tattoos, electrolysis and ear piercing.
However, the popularity of semi permanent colouring tattoos and cosmetic body piercing has prompted the council to adopt new laws that cover these areas as well.
Now the council's environmental health officers will be in a better position to monitor public health and safety practices in premises where these activities are carried out.
Local Tattoo artist Chris Higgins who works at the Tattoo-FX studio in Burgess Hill welcomes the change in the law.
"Cleanliness and hygiene is the number one priority for our studio and we work closely with the local public health authorities to make sure we comply with all regulations," said Chris.
"Cosmetic body piercing and semi permanent colouring now make up a big part of the body art industry so it is only right that they are subject to the same hygiene and monitoring standards."
