ONE hundred and seventy-one miles, 24 hours, four Felpham cyclists, one goal: to reach Paris and raise thousands of pounds for charity.
The team will leave Felpham on Saturday (June 22) for a day in their saddles, aiming to raise more than £2,000 for the Play Association Hammersmith and Fulham and Cancer Research UK.
Richard Mapley, Graham Matthews, Guy Mayger and Chris Whitney wanted to test themselves on the tough ride after the Felpham Sailing Club, to which they belong, forged links with the Play Association.
Richard, 50, of Limmer Lane, said: “The weather will play a big part in how we do. I’m also worried about staying awake. We are going to be awake for 35-40 hours and we will need to keep our concentration. That’s the bit I will find hard.”
The cyclists will leave at 5pm and cycle to Newhaven to catch the ferry to Dieppe. It will arrive at 4am local time to give the foursome until 6pm to conquer the 130 miles to the Eiffel Tower.
Chris, 45, of Bereweeke Road, cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groat’s two years ago to raise £15,000 in memory of former sailing club member, Barbara Harmer.
He said: “That ride was all about getting up day after day and going cycling. This will be totally different.”
They will be supported by Roshan Verghese and Sarah Dakin.
Everyone is invited to join the team who will be at The Fox in Felpham from 2pm on Saturday and wish them on their way.
Andy and Ali of the pub will be donating £1 from every beer and glass of wine sold to the cause.
