Exciting conference for young people at county hall

AN EXCITING and innovative conference to encourage young people to debate and discuss transport issues is taking place at County Hall in Chichester on Saturday, March 3.

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) and the Young People’s Travel Forum are hosting the event.

It is aimed at bringing young people, transport professionals and decision-makers together to debate and discuss travel aspirations and other key transport issues, and to help identify potential solutions. It is collaborative inquiry and deliberative democracy at work.

There will be an information exchange during the lunch break.

The event will also be attended by democratically-elected representatives including the WSCC cabinet minister for transport, a councillor for Horsham District Council and representatives from other district/borough councils.

There will be various talks and presentations throughout the day by transport organisations such as Metrobus, Stagecoach, Southern Railway and Sustrans as well as county council officers.

The event lasts from 9.30am-4pm. If you are interested in taking part, please contact the county council.

Whilst I applaud the idea, as "Carter St" has said - a bit of an own goal having a transport seminar on the day that all trains heading east from Chichester are cancelled and those from the west are severely curtailed. Not sure about there being any problems with buses though. Now - why haven't the various levels of Local Governement done this sort of thing before, and why only for the youth?

" aimed at bringing young people, transport professionals and decision-makers together to debate and discuss travel aspirations" Well what I read from this is that the Transport Professionals and Decision-makers could not organize a pxxx up on a bus and so they have invited young people along to pinch their ideas and share the blame once it all goes bus shaped. I am sorry that I sound cynical but it really does sound like a gimmick.

Any potential attendees should note that rail services on this date will be cancelled and replaced by buses. Due to roadworks all bus stops within walking distance will be closed. On behalf of WSCC, thank you for trying to attend...

This is a very good idea in principle. However, it needs to be chaired by a professional or nothing of value will emerge if interruptions are permitted. Debating is a separate skill from that of merely discussing difficult issues. I look forward to reading about the results from this event.
