FOUR generations of one family gathered together to celebrate as a couple marked 60 years of marriage.

Jan and Lucy van Driel enjoyed a surprise afternoon tea in a hotel to mark their diamond jubilee wedding anniversary. They were joined by 45 family members.

Two of Jan’s sisters, Heilgje and Johanna, travelled from Holland.

“This tea party has been a great surprise” said Jan.

“To have seven children, 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren is a gift from God.”

Jan, 88, and Lucy, 82, of Main Road, Barnham, came over from Holland in 1955 and intended to stay for a year.

They worked on a dairy farm in Storrington and became tenants of Choller House Farm, in Walberton, in 1961 before taking on a farm in Oving with their son, Jack, until Jan retired in 1991.

He and his wife have attended the Baptist church in Walberton for 53 years. Since retirement, the couple have kept busy with family and friends.
