AN EPIC cycle ride will see a 65-year-old Cicestrian cross the USA and back again in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Graham Young, of Ettrick Close, Chichester, is starting the 8,557-mile ride on May 12.

“I wanted to do it for a charity and they do such a worthwhile job,” he said of the hospice.

He said was feeling ‘nervous’ ahead of the ride.

“Once I get going it will be alright, but it’s hard finding food and accommodation – that can get a bit stressful.”

A member of the Bognor Regis Cycling Club, he has previously cycled long-distance races through France and Spain.

“I will ride all day into the wind and rain, uphill and downhill, climb mountains, cross desserts and if necessary ride through the night. I will never give up. I will never abandon. I will always keep those pedals turning.”

Starting in Boston, he will go west, crossing the Nevada desert and arriving on the west coast.

From there he will cycle north along the coast before turning east again and heading back to Boston, via the Appalachian mountains.

Graham hopes to raise £8,557 for St Wilfrid’s – a pound for every mile he cycles.

“I cannot put into words the love and kindness these angels give to patients and their families,” he said.
