Business group wants park cafe action

ACTION is needed now to provide Hotham Park in Bognor Regis with a cafe, the town’s businesses have said.

The chamber of commerce’s executive committee said the park’s original cafe should be re-opened as a temporary measure until a permanent eating place was provided.

Committee member Jeanette Warr said: “We should insist the old cafe, opposite the bandstand, is re-opened. It was quite adequate with the tables and chairs outside.”

Ian Harding, a fellow committee member, said: “Why on earth did Arun District Council allow the last cafe to close before a new one opened? That was the first mistake. It is a poor advertisement for visitors who come to Bognor and find the cafe in the park is shut.

“It is damaging the visitor experience in Bognor. That cafe opposite the bandstand should be opened.”

As reported, Arun is about to go out to tender again to seek a fresh operator for a purpose-built restaurant it will spend £250,000 designing and constructing in the park.

Just one potential operator came forward when the cafe business was last advertised in January. The council expects the new premises to be open next spring.
