GROUPS from across the county met today (February 13) to stage a protest against ‘fracking’ in Sussex.
Their message was, “No fracking here, no fracking anywhere.”
And they had celebrity backing in the form of well-loved British actress Susan Jameson.
Frack Free Fernhurst, Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green (KKWG), Frack Free Balcombe Residents Association, Frack Free Sussex, Frack Free Billingshurst, Friends of the Earth and other groups gathered, uniting in their efforts to campaign against applications to drill for oil and gas by company Celtique Energie.
Celtique has submitted planning applications for land between Kirdford and Wisborough Green, and in Fernhurst.
Residents from across Sussex staged the demonstration. Their simple message to government and local authorities was: “No fracking here, no fracking anywhere.”
The meeting took place in Wisborough Green where Celtique has applied to drill under a field 500 metres from the South Downs National Park boundary.
Tony Bosworth, Energy Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said: “It was great to meet Sussex residents and see the sites where companies like Cuadrilla and Celtique want to drill for oil.
“People are right to be concerned about the risks of fracking - evidence shows that problems can and do occur.
“Fracking isn’t the answer to the UK’s energy problems and we don’t need it in Sussex or anywhere.”
The KKWG group said: “From KKWG’s point of view, we were delighted to be part of this event and to have the support of Friends of the Earth, especially in joining our villages together.”
