BREAKING NEWS: Devastating fire at the Gribble Inn in Oving

Fire at the Gribble Inn

FIREFIGHTERS are still battling a blaze in Oving that has ripped through a popular village pub.

There are currently 14 fire engines at the Gribble Inn, in Gribble Lane, battling a fire that started around 5.30am today (July 19).

There are no reports of any injuries but the building, which is also home to a village shop, has been badly damaged.

A skittle alley and microbrewery in a separate building were undamaged.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was ordered to send fire engines to a ‘thatched property’ in Gribble Lane, but as soon as the crews arrived they requested more appliances.

The Gribble Inn describes itself on its website as a ‘good traditional English village pub with real ales and good seasonal, locally sourced menu’.

It is also now home to the village shop, with the The Pantry open every day, supplying villagers with essentials such as milk and freshly-baked bread.

It also runs a coffee shop from 9.30am until 11.30am.

The cause of the fire is as yet unconfirmed and the fire service said it would be unlikely to be established until tomorrow, when the fire is out and an investigation team can enter the building.

The fire has brought firefighters in from all over West Sussex, with Chichester, Bognor, East Grinstead, Petworth, Selsey, Arundel, Littlehampton and many more all sending crews to help.
