SHOPPERS have greeted the expansion of free parking in Bognor Regis with enthusiasm.

Hundreds of new discs which entitle them to stay for up to two hours without paying in three town centre car parks have been bought.

The extension of the existing scheme will see the number of ground level spaces included more than treble from the start of next month.

The 201 paying spaces at Hothamton, which also has 14 disabled slots, will join the 61 places, plus five disabled, at Lyon Street.

There is also the Fitzleet multi-storey car park with 343 spaces and 24 for disabled drivers.

The reaction to the discs could be seen at their official launch in the London Road precinct last Saturday. Members of the town’s chamber of commerce, Bognor Regis Traders’ Association and town council sold 100 discs at £1 each in the first half of their two hour event.

Felpham resident Laura Charman, 65, bought two of the yellow discs. She said: “It’s brilliant that the scheme is expanding.

“The Lyon Street car park is often full up which means you have to use Fitzleet, which is fine if you are fit.”

Rod Fraser, 63, from Felpham, also bought two discs. “It’s good to have another car park added,” he said. “It’s good value.

The current scheme has been a success since it was started two years ago by Arun and Bognor councils, the traders’ association and the chamber of commerce and 15,000 of the white discs have been sold.

Chris Heaps, the traders’ chairman: “I’m pleased with the reaction to the new discs. The biggest positive is having the Hothamton ground level car park included.

“It’s obvious the current scheme is encouraging people to come here. We hope more will now come.”
