A PACKED meeting was the biggest held by Barnham WI.

Some 120 members from around West Sussex snapped up every ticket to hear a talk by the organisation’s past national chairman, Helen Carey. She spoke about its proud history, its aims and objectives and its achievements.

Her comments were of particular relevance for one of the Barnham WI members. Pat Stagg comes from Stoney Creek, in Canada, where the movement began.

Mrs Carey’s visit was a milestone for Barnham WI at its home of the past year in the village’s community hall.

President Hazel Lloyd said: “It’s the first time we’ve had an event as big as this.

“I’ve shown a variety of the county advisors around this wonderful hall and they have been very impressed with it.

“It’s absolutely ideal. It’s a lovely location, easy to find, with plenty of parking and a lovely view outside.

“The hall needs bookings and the WI needs fresh venues and I brought them both together.”

The afternoon event last Wednesday came about a month before Barnham WI celebrates its 90th birthday.

It is approaching its new decade in good health.

“We’ve had a lot of new members since we moved to this hall,” said Mrs Lloyd. “We are getting a newcomer every month.”

Barnham WI used to meet at the previous village hall which was much smaller, outdated and falling apart.
