TWO Aldwick residents have been honoured for making the area a better place.

Mike Nicholls and Jan Malpas were each presented with an Aldwick community award by Aldwick Parish Council at its annual reception.

Mr Nicholls works tirelessly around West Meads where he is the vice-chairman of the residents’ association.

He said: “I’m thrilled to get the award for the various things I do in the community.

“I help in the gardens and I take people to hospitals and appointments like that as well as shopping.

“I’m also one of the group of people who hold a coffee morning at the community hall on Thursday mornings.

“It’s important these days, when people can be self-centred to help others like that.

“It’s important people look out for other people. A person only has to look out for one other person and the community would be a lot better.”

Queensfield East resident Mr Nicholls, 69, moved to West Meads 15 years ago..

“It’s a garden city and there’s plenty of open space,” he said. “We welcome change but it has to be for the better. Too much change nowadays isn’t like that.”

For Mrs Malpas, the past six years since she moved to Bradlond Close have been a whirl of community events.

She became involved with the Friends of West Park in 2010, two years after it started.

That involvement has also spread to helping to set up the Friends of Avisford Park.

Both sites are linked by the successful play rangers holiday sessions Mrs Malpas helped to arrange and is working with the parish council to expand.

“I’m really proud to be part of the work we are doing with the play rangers. It’s fantastic and it’s really good for the community,” she said. “It’s a fantastic area and it’s so nice to help to maintain it.

“I’m thrilled and proud to receive the award. It was something I didn’t expect.”
