MORE than 150 mums and young children enjoyed the opening of a new play area at an Aldwick church.
The large turnout delighted organisers at Aldwick Baptist Church. The brief ceremony was performed by Aldwick Parish Council deputy chairman Molly Myers and Bognor Regis town mayor Tony Gardiner.
Cllr Myers said: “You are very lucky to have this facility here. I’m very pleased this is supported because that is what you have to do to create a community spirit.
“We are a community council and we try to encourage people. They have to help themselves and we will try to help and support them.”
A bouncy castle and face painting by Clive Bennett added to the fun. The play area was created from a rubble-strewn space beside the Gossamer Lane church.
It took church members, with some help from young people, two months and £1,000 to clear the site and install an all-weather surface and safety materials.
The opening last Friday was part of the final Cafe Connect session before a break.
Church member Douglas Fleming oversees the meetings three times a week.
Each has some 30 mothers and 30 children, aged up to five.
“The cafe is for people who want to come along and relax and meet other parents,” he said.
“It’s exceeded our expectations since it started last September.”
