Lewis set to meet Duke for award

A YOUNG achiever from Felpham has a date with royalty.

Lewis Powell will meet the Duke of Edinburgh to be presented with his gold D of E award.

The presentation will take place at St James’s Palace in London on May 8. It will celebrate his achievement in completing the programme.

Lewis, 18, reached the top standard in the award ceremony as a member of the Felpham-based Artic Fox Explorer Scouts.

His hard work, determination and perseverance through the five sections of the award included a range of diverse activities during many months.

One of the most memorable was five weeks in Botswana where he slept under canvas and helped local people construct buildings and other charitable work.

He said: “It was a life-changing experience where I made many new friends from across the country. I would recommend it to everyone. It also shows commitment when applying for jobs.”

Lewis was able to prove a great team member while he worked towards the D of E award by keeping the others entertained with stories.

He recently gave a presentation of his exploits to more than 100 people at the district scouts award ceremony for D of E participants.

Lewis attributes his gold award to helping him to get work in his chosen career of electrical engineering.
