On Saturday residents who want all of the options - including a northern bypass - reinstated gathered in protest.

The following day members of a new transport forum called Chichester Moves On led a walk to see the full impact some of the current five options would have on people living in houses clustered around the Stockbridge Roundabout.

They viewed the listed 17th century building Stockbridge House, which is in line for demolition under three of the five options which propose a major new flyover at the junction and the service road that will eat into the front gardens of Stockbridge.

Speaking for Chichester Moves On, Jenny Cole said: “For decades Chichester has been blighted by the relentless growth in traffic on the A27 bypass.

“Built in the ‘30s as a relief road, it now has to cope daily with tens of thousands of vehicles that have no intention of doing any business in Chichester.

“World Health Organisation limits are being regularly exceed, with the exhaust toxins drifting over residents for miles – including over local schools.”

Many of the hundreds of people living immediately south of the Stockbridge Roundabout are particularly fearful that Option 2 will be chosen.

Stockbridge resident Marilyn McAuslan said: “This is a nightmare for me and the whole of Stockbridge.

“We moved here to escape the bustle of London and are now staring at the prospect of a monstrous flyover and living in an area wedged between the A27 and a new relief road that is a stalking horse for a southern bypass.”

The day before residents who want to see options for a northern bypass - which were dropped ahead of the now closed public consultations - reinstated, met in protest.

More than 3,200 people have now signed a petition calling on the northern bypass options to be reinstated in the project.

Sian Taylor who set it up said: “I’m not saying that this is the best option but I feel that, in a democracy, we should be able to discuss the pros and cons of all the options.

A preferred route is expected to be announced this winter.
