Traditional street lamps are to be installed in Hotham Park to light the way for pedestrians after dark.

The heritage-style lamps, matching those installed last year, will be set on a timer to come on as darkness falls and switch off at around 11.30pm.

The lights are funded by Arun District Council and Dudley Wensley, deputy leader, said: “We welcome the start of the second phase of the lighting project in this wonderful park.

“We want to encourage people to use the park after dark to visit the fantastic café, or just to take a stroll and the new lights will make the park feel safer and even more welcoming.”

The project will light the path between Hotham Park Café and Church Path and also the path from the café to the London Road car park, via a second Church Path entrance.

The lights will be fitted with shields to ensure just the paths are illuminated.

Tom Barnes, who runs the Hotham Park Café, said: “This is great news! I’m so glad that the council has continued to improve the park.”

The work is set to begin in mid-August and be completed by October 2016.
