COMMUNITY gardeners in Bognor Regis have seen their hard work assessed for a regional competition.

The volunteers have spent some 600 hours over eight months transforming the Hothamton Sunken Gardens in the town centre.

South and South East in Bloom judge Jean Griffin visited the site for the contest’s It’s Your Neighbourhood category.

She said: “The competition is all about community engagement, rather than flowers, and getting people together and improving their local spaces.”

She looked for community participation, environmental responsibility and gardening achievement.

Kim Davis, one of 13 community gardeners, said: “We love Bognor, we love flowers and we love gardening.”
