ALMOST £1,000 was raised by a Felpham woman at her first fundraising event for her English Channel swim.
Beth Clegg and her five team-mates collected £950 from last Friday’s launch of their summer charity endurance test.
She said: “Friday night was a great success. That’s our first event over. We have two more to go to get to our target of £6,000 between the team.”
Beth has formed Team Pavelka to tackle the English Channel, probably in the week of August 14, to raise money for Hoop UK.
Helping Overcome Obesity Problems is a charity backed by Sky Living presenter Jessie Pavelka.
Beth, 46, got to know Jessie when she spent a year on anothe Sky series losing weight and getting fit.
This inspired her to seek to achieve her ambition of swimming to France. She will joined by her sister Meg Brackley, Sarah LeBorq, Fiona Cresswell, Jill Tipping and Mike Latham.
Mike was a support swimmer when Felpham resident Beth swam in the River Arun last summer for the TV series.
The team hopes to start swimming outdoors soon to prepare for the channel in just over four months time.
They will start from Dover and each spend an hour in the water alone accompanied by a support boat. Their destination will depend on the tide and wind.
Their fundraising launch took place at Jack Rabbit Slims on Bognor Regis seafront. About 100 people attended and created a great atmosphere.
Singer/songwriter Paddy Benedict started the night with a song off his CD, Sparkle.
Well-known local singer Olly Hite finished proceedings with songs from his album, Joanna, which can be downloaded for free from his website.
A raffle helped to bring in the donations. Its prizes included a magnum of Champagne, a case of wine and a donated meal.
Feedback from those present has been positive. Sarah Elliott described it as an ‘awesome’ occasion. Lee Boniface said: “Great night, well done guys.”
