Head teacher Chris Kronda and school governor Jenny Lelliott accompanied the year-six children on the trip to London yesterday.

Isabella Govinden, Amy Buckfield, Hayden Thompson and Julia Zaborowska joined 800 other children and young people from across the UK in celebration of Commonwealth Day for a service attended by the Queen and other members of the royal family.

Mr Kronda said: “It was a wonderful opportunity for us to be part of this auspicious occasion. The children were extremely excited, especially when they saw Her Majesty The Queen and other senior members of the Royal Family.

“Part of the day also involved a visit and tour of the Houses of Parliament. This, together with Commonwealth Day, gave the children a real sense of being involved in a great British tradition.”

The service celebrated the 2017 Commonwealth theme A Peace-building Commonwealth, reaffirming the Commonwealth Charter principle that ‘international peace and security, sustainable economic growth and development and the rule of law are essential to the progress and prosperity of all’.

The aim of the service was to celebrate the unity, diversity and linkages of the modern Commonwealth and to foster greater understanding of the Commonwealth’s achievements and role.
