Students at Chichester College were full of pride when they donned caps and mortarboards for their graduation ceremony at Chichester Cathedral.

The location provided an inspiring backdrop for the ceremony which celebrated the achievements of students who over the past two years have completed work-related higher education qualifications such as Higher National Diplomas and Higher National Certificates.

The ceremony began with a procession of curriculum staff and the senior management team led by the head verger of the cathedral, and the organ was played by Paul Manley.

Principal Shelagh Legrave opened the ceremony and then handed over to Gerry Griffith, head of Higher Education studies to read out the special awards.

He said: “It has been particularly pleasing to see the vast number of students who have achieved high grades.

“It is also impressive to see that a greater number are progressing to university for one more year to achieve an honours degree in their chosen subject. The rest have obtained or are obtaining professional level work.

“Graduation is always an exciting time of year, but we must not forget all of the students (another 170) who are on courses franchised by partner universities who will receive their Foundation Degrees, Certificates of Education, and Post Graduate Certificates of Education at ceremonies organised by the universities.

“We are also looking forward to the next academic year when two new Foundation Degrees in digital media and engineering will be offered.”

The University of Portsmouth’s deputy vice chancellor, Rebecca Bunting addressed the audience with a moving and inspiring story, wishing students the very best for their futures and the ceremony was closed by college governor, David Hett.

Afterwards students, lecturers, family and friends enjoyed refreshments in the marquee served by hospitality students.
