New yellow paving at the top of the high street has been labelled ‘absolutely appalling’ by Bognor residents.
The new surfacing along London Road has recently been laid as part of £600,000 improvements to the town centre.
There is already a large oil mark, footprints and other marks along it, prompting Bognor resident Valerie O’Neil to say: “It just looks horrible. When I first saw it I assumed it had been laid prior to something more suitable being put on top.
“The next time I walked past I noticed lots of oil all over it as well as dirty great footprints. There’s lots of other marks on it as well, it’s absolutely appalling.
“I spoke to someone at the council and said it had been designed to match the pedestrian area, but there’s nothing in the pedestrian area that colour.
“She said they would either clean it up or relay it. When I asked if it would be done in black, she said no they wanted to be more innovative, so it would stay yellow.”
Simone Thompson, who runs Escape 2 Vape nearby, said: “I agree, it’s totally the wrong colour and all the marks make it look so untidy. They can relay it but the same will just happen again.
“I appreciate they’re trying to improve the town, but for the money they’ve spent they could have done better.”
