It stated an ‘emergency planning meeting’ has taken place in regards to The Beach restaurant and former Mud Club site, between council officers and representatives of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Police, West Sussex County Council, property management teams, gas and electricity services, Bognor Regis Town Council and the leaseholders of the property.

The statement added: “The priority for all affected is to make the remaining site safe which will include some demolition. This will hopefully begin during the next 24 hours.

“This will enable residents of Cavendish House to access their properties and also to allow some of the adjacent highways to re-open. The gas supply to the site has been disconnected and once the structure has been made safe then the electricity supply will also be disconnected and made safe.”

The council confirmed the emergency evacuation centre, set up at Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham, has now been closed.

In the meantime residents have been moved to ‘alternative locations as they await re-entry to their properties’, a time period for this was outlined as ‘in the next 24-48 hours, depending on progress of the demolition and ensuring the safety of the structure’.

The statement concluded: “This incident triggered a multi-agency emergency incident response and all agencies involved are continuing to work closely together to ensure that safety and security are the priority and that nearby residents can return to their homes and the roadways re-open as soon as possible.”
