A CYCLIST who had a ‘lucky escape’ after she was knocked of her bike in Bognor Regis has appealed for witnesses.

Kathy Andrews was cycling home during her lunch break last Monday when she was hit by a car in Hawthorn Road.

Kathy, of Fletcher Way, said: “I didn’t see it coming. All of a sudden I just felt myself come off the bike. I hit a parked car and then bounced on to the floor.

“It felt like I was on the ground for ages, but people quickly came to help and I was taken to hospital by ambulance.

“I know I have had a very lucky escape. It could have been a lot worse. I was not wearing a helmet at the time, but since then I have bought one.”

In the aftermath of the incident, Kathy was told she was hit by a dark coloured BMW possible black or navy blue.

“The car didn’t stop, they must have realised they hit me. There was a loud bang and I screamed,” said Kathy.

Kathy, who works at Kamsons Pharmacy in Durlston Drive, was riding a purple/pink ladies Raleigh bike.

She has bruising to her arm and legs, as well as nerve damage to her elbow.

Kathy said: “I am in a lot of pain. I have been signed off sick by the doctor so can’t go to work.

“A lot of it is the shock as well. It happened about 100 yards away from my home. It is a journey I do all the time. You just don’t expect anything like it to happen to you.

“It will take me a long time to be able to ride the bike again, but I am determined to do it. I just can’t believe the driver did not stop.”

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “The cyclist was riding along Hawthorn Road at around 1.45pm when a car passed by and clipped the bike but did not stop. The cyclist suffered bruising to her arm and cuts and bruises. The car was described as blue or black but has not been located.”
