COUNTY NEWS: Service held to remember victims of airshow tragedy

A church service to remember the victims of a Sussex airshow tragedy was held today (Saturday, August 20).

The memorial service was held at St Mary de Haura Church in Church Street, Shoreham at 11am and conducted by Rev Terry Stratford.

It was organised by Shoreham Churches Together to remember those who died at last year’s Shoreham Airshow crash.

Candles were lit for the 11 men who lost their lives.

The first anniversary of the Shoreham Airshow tragedy is on Monday (August 22).

A minute’s silence will be held at 1.22pm on Monday at the Old Toll Bridge in Shoreham, the exact time the tragedy happened last year, when a Hawker Hunter jet crashed onto the A27 at Lancing during a display.

Maurice Abrahams, 76, from Brighton; Graham Mallinson, 72, from Newick; Mark Trussler, 54, from Worthing; Dylan Archer, 42, from Brighton; Richard Smith, 26, from Hove; Tony Brightwell, 53, from Hove; Mark Reeves, 53, from Seaford; Worthing United footballers Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, both 23; personal trainer Matt Jones, 24, and Daniele Polito, 23, from Worthing, all lost their lives.

Louise Goldsmith, West Sussex County Council leader, will be among those laying flowers at Monday’s ceremony.
