The UKIP group leader at the county council has questioned the use of £245,000 to promote West Sussex as a rural tourist location.

West Sussex County Council’s ‘Beautiful Outdoors’ campaign involves marketing the area as a tourist destination for cyclists and walkers.

But Cllr Mike Glennon asked how much was being spent, and what measurable indicators would be used to assess the impact of the campaign at a full council meeting on Friday, March 27.

Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “This is a campaign with our partners to promote the outdoors and encourage young people and dynamic people to come from London and bike and enjoy everything outside London and come down to West Sussex and I make no apology for promoting our countryside.”

Mr Glennon described it as a ‘very nice answer to a different question but not my question’.

Mrs Goldsmith replied that £245,000 had been allocated for the campaign, and they would be using Google Analytics and talking to businesses to assess its impact.
