DOZENS of workers based at council offices in Bognor Regis have staged a strike in support of a pay claim.

The 51 employees in the county council’s contact centre walked out on Tuesday, April 2, for better wages.

Their action left under half of the centre’s 84 workers to deal with the thousands of calls to the council the centre handles daily.

The Unison members organised a morning picket line outside the centre in Durban House on Durban Road.

Sarah McGreal, Unison’s regional officer, said: “This is the first of a series of planned one-day strikes. We have not decided on the other dates yet. We are hoping to encourage the employer to come back to the negotiating table.”

The contact centre is run by Serco on the council’s behalf. Pay talks between the company and union started last autumn.
